CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION:
Despite
making English a compulsory subject, our undergraduate curriculum is unable to
improve major linguistic skills of students properly. For our educational system, SLA theories
should be a framework that drives the development of curriculum.
Curriculum,
due to a variety of definitions and a multitude of approaches, has become a
complex term in the field of education .Curriculum is complete learning
experience provided by institution. It includes content of course, and teaching
methodology and other aspects like norms and values or school culture under
which institution is organized. The coursebook represents a way of influencing large amounts of
language teaching without going through individual teachers. Rather than
training or forming thousands of teachers individually, a single coursebook can
influence thousands of classrooms
.Curriculum also include teaching methodology, if teachers understand
the process of learning then they can teach more efficiently; SLA research is
“a resource for changing teachers’ professional cultures” (Markee, 1997).
SLA
research examines broad range of theoretical, methodological and pedagogical
issues concerning how English should be acquired as foreign language. SLA
research employs a broad range of research designs, it also include survey or
experimental research. They reflect which condition will help in learning
second language. SLA seeks to apply theories to classroom teaching and
curriculum design. It is clear that methods of teaching English language has
not yielded the desired objectives .In this research I argue that educators
must approach English language from the prescriptive of SLA theories and should
update their curriculum according to the latest research.
OBJECTIVES
To
find out curriculum deficiencies at undergraduate level by analyzing short stories
textbook of Punjab University.
To
find out latest research in second language acquisition field and give
suggestions for updating our curriculum.
STATEMENT OF RESEARCH QUESTION
The researcher will study on
undergraduate language curriculum deficiencies .Our curriculum should be
carefully designed and regularly updated according to the latest SLA research.
The study will focus on how committees are routinely established to design curriculum
but they come up without reviewing or updating the old textbooks.
DELIMITATION:
The
researcher has delimited her work to B.A level English language curriculum
deficiencies of Punjab University. In order to narrow the focus, the researcher
will only analyse the content of the textbook “A Selection of Short Stories”
through the lens of SLA theories.
RESEARCH QUESTION:
How does the English textbook of B.A
level taught at Punjab University mediate on the need to update its curriculum according
to SLA theories?
SIGNIFICANCE
The rationale for selecting this
topic is not only due to its importance in the Pakistani context but also
because this theme has largely remained unexplored in the existing academic
literature. Textbooks at undergraduate level do not incorporate the latest
research of SLA theories. In the course of this research the researcher will
attempt to explore in greater detail the gaps that contribute to the overall
deterioration of the educational system. The research will be new and
beneficial and will provide a deep understanding of the subject under study.
This research will help researcher to do further research on the subject.
CHAPTER-2
LITERATURE REVIEW:
Academic literature on this subject has
identified a close relationship between curriculum and SLA theories. Vivian J.
Cook ,University of Essex, UK suggests a number of ways in which SLA
research can help improve coursebooks
and thereby enhance the learning of large numbers of students. According to
this research only few coursebooks take into account, for example: that the
acquisition of basic syntax precedes the acquisition of inflectional morphology,
or that vocabulary needs to be encountered in a structural and semantic context
in order to be effectively acquired. Coursebook authors also need to bear in
mind that pronunciation is necessary not only for communication but also for
the actual learning of L2 forms, and that some aspects of the L2 writing system
need to be explicitly taught.
.
In research “Curriculum as practised
in Pakistan” Nilofar Vazir suggests
improvement in our curriculum as the present curriculum is not fulfilling its
needs. According to this research present curriculum therefore does not
"encompass all learning opportunities provided by the school" (Saylor
& Alexander, 1974), nor does it provide for both "directed" and “undirected"
opportunities (Bobbitt, 1972) for learning. Further she also discusses areas
which need improvement.
Although there are many researches conducted
on SLA theories and Pakistani curriculum deficiencies, there are rarely few
works which emphasis the significance to update curriculum through the lens of
SLA theories. This theme has largely remained unexplored in the existing
academic literature so my work will contribute in filling the gaps present in
academic literature.
CHAPTER-3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
This
research is qualitative so it would be descriptive in nature. There will be no
previous hypothesis. Data will be collected to gain insight into phenomenon of
interest.
CHAPTER-4
DATA
COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS:
The researcher will collect data
by reading books, articles, and utilising Internet sources. The researcher will
analyse the undergraduate language curriculum textbook through SLA theories and
will be drawing from a
range of experiences to reflect on different aspects of this project.
CHAPTER-5
Conclusion
Conclusion will be drawn after
content analysis
